The Eaton Cutler-Hammer KT2175T Adjustable Thermal-Magnetic Trip Unit is a trip unit device in the K Frame family of breakers that are used for protection conductors and line-connected electrical devices from short-circuits and current overloads. Like every Cutler-Hammer-designed breaker with a thermal-magnetic trip unit, it is 80% rated, and it features an electromechanically controlled high-speed blow open action feature and a 2-pole wiring configuration. The KT2175T has a nominal current rating of 175 Amps, with a maximum interrupting rating of 35 kAIC, and it is designed to accommodate 600 Volts AC maximum voltage across its terminals.
The Eaton KT2175T trip unit is designed to provide both thermal and magnetic trip actions, using a bimetal strip and electromagnet trip elements. A fast-acting thermal trip action is achieved when the heated bimetal deflects due to a prolonged circuit overload, and it causes a circuit trip. Magnetic tri-action is achieved by connecting electromagnets in a series with a line load, and when the circuit current goes above the designated value, it instantaneously trips. The KT2175T has a trip free operating mechanism that is capable of holding the contacts open in the event of abnormal circuit conditions, and it shows if the trip unit is tripped, off, or on. It is calibrated for a default ambient temperature limit of 40 degrees Celsius, at which the trip unit will be 80% rated, but it allows for field recalibration for a higher ambient temperature. The KT2175T weighs approximately 1.5 pounds, and it is both UL and CSA certified.
