The Westinghouse HFD2045 is a fixed thermal and fixed magnetic molded case circuit breaker. The circuit breaker has a high interrupting capacity and a voltage rating of 600 Volts AC. The thermal magnetic trip mechanism uses a bimetal strip which is located behind a trip bar along the current path. The bimetal strip works by heating up once an electrical current is at more than the breaker’s rated current. The magnetic aspect of the tripping mechanism used by the HFD2045 employs an electromagnet whose power is generated by winding a wire around an iron core. The Westinghouse HFD2045, due to the electromagnet found in the magnetic part of the tripping mechanism, is capable of extinguishing the arc between the breaker contacts in 4 milliseconds. This makes thermal magnetic circuit breakers like the HFD2045 be the preferred choice when looking for instantaneous protection against short circuits. Other circuit breakers may take more time to stop the current flow in the event of a short circuit.
The HFD2045 does not allow for user replacement or field replacement of internal components, including the trip unit. The circuit breaker belongs to the Series C family of molded case circuit breakers that are manufactured by the Eaton Corporation. The HFD2045 uses a molded case and it accommodates bolt-on connections when mounting the circuit breaker on a panelboard or a busway connector panel. With a molded case, the HFD2045 can withstand a variety of harsh environmental conditions. However, the circuit breaker is temperature sensitive and mounting it in environments with an ambient temperature of more than 40 degrees Celsius will impair the effectiveness of the tripping mechanism.
