The Cutler-Hammer HFD2040 is a molded case circuit breaker. The breaker uses a thermal-magnetic trip mechanism. These mechanisms use a combination of bimetals and an electromagnetic assembly to protect the circuit against overcurrents. The HFD2040 has 2 poles and a current rating of 40 Amps. The circuit breaker is manufactured for use on the busy industrial floor where its instantaneous trip characteristic help the HFD2040 protect a circuit without any intentional delays. Note that whenever an overcurrent occurs on 1 pole, the circuit breaker will simultaneously open the other pole.
The Cutler-Hammer HFD2040 molded case circuit breaker has a push-to-trip button which allows the breaker to be tripped manually while eliminating the need for live parts. Additionally, the button is located on the front panel of the HFD2040 to make maintenance access and routine checkups easy. The circuit breaker has labeled positions which show the position of the tripping arm of the non-interchangeable trip unit. These positions are the on, off, and tripped positions. However, the HFD2040 features an extra unmarked position, the reset position, which is located beyond the off position and it is used to reset the circuit breaker after a trip. The Cutler-Hammer HFD2040 has an interrupt capacity of 25 kAIC at 500 Volts AC and 65 kAIC at 380 Volts AC. When on a DC-powered system, the HFD2040 has a 22 kAIC at 22 Volts DC. The direct current rating only applies to substantially non-inductive circuits, and the DC ratings also attract a minimum time constant of 8 milliseconds at 22 kA.
